Founded in 1968, Pine Ridge School is an internationally recognized, co-educational, un-graded, secondary, boarding and day school for students with language-based learning disabilities. Students of average to above average intelligence, absent of any major behavioral or emotional disturbances, come to Pine Ridge from all over the world to enroll in our three programs: Winter School, Summer School and the Post-Graduate Year.
Located in the foothills of Vermont’s Green Mountains, the campus rests on 130 acres of wooded land and includes an expansive adventure course with high and low ropes course elements. The campus’ close proximity to the city of Burlington affords students the opportunity to enjoy cultural events around town, as well as the adventures of nearby ski resorts, hiking trails and Lake Champlain.
The Winter School enrolls up to 113 boys and girls aged thirteen to eighteen. Students may earn a standard Vermont high school diploma. Each day, in addition to five core classes, students engage in a one-to-one remedial, tutorial session, supplemented by an independent learning session called Skills Lab, where they work toward goals they have set with their tutor. After the academic day, students participate in the residential program where they build confidence and friendships as they learn to live and work with each other in a group setting. In this environment they practice independent living skills, such as cooking, team building and self-advocacy to prepare for a successful transition into a post-secondary placement.
Pine Ridge School offers a residential program in the summer for students ages nine to eighteen. The students spend six weeks improving language processing skills by attending two one-to-one Orton-Gillingham tutorials per day. In addition, they enjoy a full range of outdoor sports and regular camp activities, from a daily swim to mountain climbing.
Pine Ridge School has also developed a unique transitional program for recent high school graduates. Building on the students’ own self-directed plans for their futures—whether those are career objectives or further education—the program provides support networks enabling them to continue strengthening learning skills while developing skills in areas linked with long-term goals. An Individual Action Plan (IAP) and a menu of service options offer students a personalized, flexible program for growth in key areas. LD types supported: Dyslexia, NLD, Language Based School accreditations: TABS, NAIS, NEAS&C - Profile last updated: 06/05/2007
