Activities During Boarding School

I played soccer, squash, and lacrosse. I was a member of the environmental action club, a tour guide, and played the handbells. For my senior year I was head of the Athletic Association as Head of School.

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?

The diversity among students has broadened my education. Meeting so many different people from so many different backgrounds has enabled me to make wonderful friends.

2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?

The most important thing about Westover is that I made all my best friends. We are all so different and learn so much from one another. Although we are scattered across the world, when we come together it feels like a day has not passed. I also had a wonderful squash coach who inspired me to keep going with the sport and I continue to be successful with this.

3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?

I wouldn't have changed anything. We had a wonderful four years.

4.) What did you like most about your school?

The people. That is what makes the school.

5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?

When you take a tour make sure you come with the girls here. See how they interact with one another. Don't think that because it is an all girls school that it is not for your. There are so many benefits of a single sex education.

1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?

I loved the small classroom environment. My most favorite academic department was history. Because they work on using an elective system you are able to pick specific areas of history that interest you such as the Russian Revolution or the 1920s in America. This is much more interesting than doing a broad history year after year. The English department is very strong with intensive grammar starting freshmen year.

1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?

I loved being able to try new sports without feeling uncomfortable or out of place. I picked up squash and lacrosse in high school and now I am currently on my collegiate team. There are so many opportunities for students to succeed even in sports they have never tried before. Being required to participate in a sport each semester is essential to the well being of developing girls.

1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?

I was active with the handbell choirs. I played for four years and loved it. My senior year we traveled to Germany, France, and Austria with the Glee club and were able to perform at various locations. Although I was more an athlete my time at Westover, I feel that there was rarely any times that I missed the theatrical or dance performances. I loved seeing all my peers perform and was eager to hear about all their successes.

1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?

I liked that there were so many opportunities to be involved. The Westover community stresses involvement in community service and club activities. You rarely found a student that was not involved in two or more clubs.

1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?

I was a day student. I loved how we were integrated on the corridors with what are called "Day Lounges" we were able to share space with the boarders and mingle from room to room. the dorm parents made it easy for day students to sleep over and were so welcoming.

1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.

The dining hall is open for three meals a day. However, there is a school store and snack bar that are open during the day. The dining staff also puts out a snack at 10 am. the dorm parents also put out snack in the evening. I would say that the dining hall, most days, is better than my dining hall in college. Sunday brunch is to die for and as I day student I often came in on Sundays to eat it.

1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.

Students are allowed to sign out at allocated times to walk to the pizza restaurant down the road or down the hill in town. Faculty and day students are very willing to take boarders out to town to do shopping. Ever week there are shuttles to the mall and other near by stores.

2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?

I loved the all girls atmosphere. Everyone was so close with one another. It is not like a regular high school. There were dances and weekend activities every weekend. Most of the time I just hung out with friends at school. We had a blast just laughing with one another.
