Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
I graduated in 2020 and I spent my junior and senior year attending Oak Hill Academy. I was active in many clubs and in the leadership program as well as a national honor society student. If you are considering sending your child to A boarding high school than I can not think of a better option than Oak Hill Academy. Oak Hill offers a structured environment that bestows upon the students a strong sense of both self and community. Faculty and staff work very hard to ensure that students grow to their upmost potential and become well rounded young adults. Since I’ve graduated I’ve enrolled in Roanoke college and have felt more than prepared for the work load of college. I am currently taking part in an internship at Oak Hill and am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that have and continue to be given to me.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
At Oak hill I found out for myself who I was and the type of person I wanted to be I performed many times playing the guitar in home room in the morning which I was very proud of myself for doing and I got into the national honor society which I also was very proud of myself for. Overall, I became more responsible and more accepting of those different to me at my time at Oak Hill.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
I would have gotten involved with the community faster than I previously did and my advice is the same to others going here get involved with the community because the more you put in the more you get out.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
The sense of community and the faculty.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Make what is best of it, don’t dwell on the negative and surround yourself with positive people.
Academics:
1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The teachers really do their best to help you in any way they can whether it be in or outside the classroom. All of the faculty and staff are extremely nice and are all very good people.
Athletics:
1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Oak Hill is home to a famous high school basketball team who has hosted countless NBA players. Apart from that they have plenty of focus on other sports such as wrestling which I took part in my junior year
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
There are plenty of different art and music classes to take. For example I took graphic design as well as an intermediate music class and I enjoyed both thoroughly. In my music class I was able to perform on stage in home room multiple times.
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
Their are plenty of extracurricular activities, opportunities for leadership, and even volunteer work for local charities. I took part in many leadership roles including being a dorm leader and taking part in other associated leadership roles both in and out of school.
Dorm Life:
1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
Free time in the dorm is often used to hang out with your peers and relax and have fun. There are game rooms with a TV and other game tables in every dorm in which people can watch TV, movies, or play video games with friends on.
Dining:
1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
The dining faculty are always extremely nice and caring towards the students and give a range of different foods everyday including many healthy options.
Social and Town Life:
1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Oak Hill is surrounded by mountains and forests and it takes at least 30 minutes to get into another town. However, there are plenty of small convenience stores and nature parks surrounding campus that are visited often in off campus trips hosted by faculty.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
The people here are very accepting and their is always a friend group to find at Oak Hill and I have made lifelong friends throughout my years here and know others who have too.
