Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
At Camden Military Academy, many aspects of the school are unique. One of my favorite things about Camden Military Academy is the willingness to bring the cadets out of their shells. For me, a small kid from a very small town who never really liked to talk to anybody, it was hard to make friendships, but the encouragement I had from the staff and cadets around me made me feel like we were all on the huge family. I was strongly advised by every single mentor at Camden to go out and try at least two sports. I was even pushed more to join at least one club, it was nice to see how everybody works together to make sure we are all successful.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
I would love to share about the rank system at Camden. It's almost like a thrive to keep going every time you are ranked up; it makes you want to continue to do well and strive not only in your academics but as a cadet as well.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
If I had to advise kids going to Camden, it is to put yourself out there; you never know who you might meet. It may be hard adjusting to a new place, but your willingness and drive to make it to the finish line will grow as you get closer to graduating. I tell cadets that are still there to this day that I miss it all the time. I wish I could go back and see my friends and enjoy the feeling of Camden again.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
I loved all the connections I made before Camden. I was hanging around kids I should not have been hanging out with. Kids who did not care for my well being. But once I came to Camden, I found my place and still am friends with the many people who graduated along side me at Camden.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
My favorite snack at the snack bar has to be recess pieces after a good practice, and eating some candy always hits the spot for me. I have given credit to my company, Alpha company, which I love so dearly. GO ALPHA!!!
Academics:
1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
School was a very challenging place for me. I was diagnosed with high-level dyslexia that made reading and writing very challenging. Camden gave me tools to help with my learning disability, utilizing extra test time and a calculator for any math classes. What was a game changer with Camden's academics was the small class sizes, with roughly about 8 to 10 people in one class. That helped me focus and also gave me a lot of one one-on-one time with the teacher.
Athletics:
1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
At Camden, there is a policy they call the no-cut policy. It stands in place so that every cadet can try out for any sport they wish to play. This helped me in a way that I could try a sport and see if I truly enjoyed it. One thing I loved the most was my coaches; they were always interested in showing me how to get better, not just supporting me on the field but off the field as well.
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
I was never huge on theatre, but trying it for the first time in my senior year was an absolute turn around to my opinion on musical arts. They were our arts teachers striving for any cadet to come out and try performing or giving a shot at an instrument you would like to play. I also never played any instruments coming into Camden, and I was always interested in learning how to play the drums. Camden gave me the tools and encouragement I needed to pursue playing the drums. I am now in college and still play the drums every day.,
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
There are many opportunities for cadets to get involved with community service. We have places where the cadets can read to the elementary school kids when you join the book club or even help out at the homeless shelter serving food for the homeless. Camden does a great job getting all the cadets to make a impact in the community.
Dorm Life:
1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
When you live in the barracks, you will be put with a roommate with whom you share a bunk bed. The barracks are assorted with bathrooms and showers for two halls. I loved how close you truly get with your roommate. When I was living at Camden I got really close with my roommate and we still talk to this day
Dining:
1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
At Camden, the whole core of cadets eat together. You will sit down at your table with a high ranking officer at the end, and you will be paired with people you enjoy talking to. The food is good too, ranging from a wide variety of options for the cadets.
Social and Town Life:
1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Camden is a cute little town with many shops, movie theaters, and more. I would always love it when my family would come to pick me up from Camden, and we had a wide variety of places to eat. Another thing is the love for the academy around the whole community and how every cadet is much respected in the town of Camden.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
The social life at Camden is great because you are all in the same boat. I have met some of my best friends in Camden and even wish them to be by my side at my wedding. When I think about Camden, all I can think about is the brotherhood, the will to succeed, and the desire to have no man left behind. If one of us falls, there is someone right behind us to pick us up and continue to push forward.
